Out of the Stack

Books, books, books - everywhere you look, piles and piles of books. As of the first quarter of 2020, Amazon has over three million eBooks for sale. According to Peter Hildick-Smith, the CEO of the book-industry analysis firm the Codex Group, roughly 25.5 million U.S. households bought books in the last quarter of 2019, and a full quarter of those households use Prime Reading, a feature of Amazon Prime.

I am sure you have Googled many book promotion/marketing services since you started writing. There are some good ones out there, but many are way too expensive and promise you the sun, moon, and stars - TV and radio spots, magazines, book tours, and on and on. For most of us, the price for such advertising is out of our budget. So what are we supposed to do?

Please allow me to take a few minutes to share my own failures and victories. When I started out in 2002, I like many fledgling writers attempted to entice a literary agency (any agency) to represent me. No dice. After a year of that and, desperate to get my book published, I paid a vanity press company $1,800 to put out my book. They didn’t edit it, format it, or design my cover. They merely threw it out there to die a painful death. Needless to say, I didn’t sell any books to speak of, other than to friends and an occasional relative. My quarterly royalty checks averaged $3.47. Ouch!

Then came Amazon! I discovered Createspace in 2013 (now KDP - Kindle Direct Publishing) and that was a game-changer. The results were amazing. Currently, my first series On the Edge of Time (2 books) has over 300reviews with a rating of 4.8. My second series released from 2015-19, Hidden Thrones (5 books) has 850 reviews with a rating of 4.8.

Over the last 18 years, I have learned much about marketing books. Each series has enjoyed the honor of being #1 in Christian Fiction/Fantasy and, for the most part, I have been successful in maintaining their positions among Amazon’s Best Sellers.
